"Was that your wife?" asked the captain, 
after a few moments' silence.

"No," answered Zabavin faintly, his lips shaking.

"Lie down and have a rest," the captain suggested.
"There's a spare bunk over there."

Zabavin obediently took his things off and lay down 
on the hard, narrow bunk; at its head a lifebelt was fixed.
The cabin rose and fell almost imperceptibly with the waves.
The water gurgled merrily along the sides.  

"So that's happiness," thought Zabavin and immediately 
saw in front of him the image of Gustya's face.  
"So that's love! How strange... love!"
